A Body Of Divinity
A couple years ago I was at a conference and asked Steven Lawson what were some of his recommendations for pastoral ministry. One of the books that he highly recommended was Thomas Watson’s A Body Of Divinity. Once I got a copy of it…I understood why he gave it such high praise. We live in a time where it is extremely important to be grounded in what we believe as God’s people and unfortunately a lot of people in the church are not. Over the last century the church has drifted away from using the creeds, confessions, and catechisms as helpful resources for discipleship. In this book, Watson explains the importance of catechism and how it lays the foundation for all believers. And after he has done this he exposits the Westminster Shorter Catechism.
This book can function as a clear and concise doctrine book but it is also very devotional and practical. You can take your time and go through sections because of the way that the book is laid out. Some of the Puritans such as Owen are difficult to read but Watson has to be one of the most readable Puritans. You will find yourself reading further than you planned just because of the way that Watson writes.
One of my favorite things about the Puritans is that while the doctrine that they are presenting is deep and profound…they would also make sure to help explain how these doctrines apply to our lives. You get this from Watson in this book. You will grow in the knowledge of God, be helped to actually live out what you have learned, and also walk away spiritually refreshed. This is a must read for new and seasoned Christians!
