The Sovereignty of God by A.W. Pink
Is God in control?
In the aftermath of the election, in a time where natural disasters are happening more frequently, in a world where the threat of terrorism seems to be closer to home than before, we can find ourselves in a place of insecurity and wondering if God really is in control. The phrases “God is sovereign” or “God is in control” have become so common to use in situations where we feel powerless, and yet even though we utter the words, our hearts do not cling to the amazing truth that He really is in control. God is sovereign.
In his book, The Sovereignty of God, A.W. Pink explains the sovereignty of God by saying, “We mean the supremacy of God, the kingship of God, the godhood of God.” He is the King, He has the power, God is in control of everything. He has the absolute right to do all things according to His good pleasure. Throughout this book Pink not only shows how the sovereignty of God is a doctrine taught in the Scriptures, but He pastors the reader in helping them understand that this doctrine has to affect the way you go about living the Christian life.
To be honest when I saw that this book was around 250 pages long, I thought to myself, “how can this book be this long and just be about the sovereignty of God?” After reading it, I now see that this is a robust book that covers a lot on this doctrine, but still more can be said about the sovereignty of God. It allowed me to see areas where I may have had the head knowledge, but my heart was unaffected.
Why read this book?
In this work, Pink discusses some hard but true teachings about the sovereignty of God that challenges the reader to study the Scriptures further and solidify their view and defense for the doctrines that they believe. In our day where this doctrine is misunderstood, it is important that it is studied and taught, because it will affect the way we live our lives and how we view God. A right view of the doctrine of God’s sovereignty will produce humility, a knowledge of God which leads to worship, a sense of security and comfort knowing that God is in control and that all things happen according to His eternal purpose.
I recommend the Baker Books version of this work. You can purchase it via Amazon for a great price.
